The revelation of one’s creative calling is an epiphany. Mine came from the photography stacks of the Richmond Public Library.
Tina Kite found her destiny reading about milliner Amy Hamilton of Granville Millinery Company in Ohio. All I had to do was hit the streets with camera in hand, Doisneau and Erwitt in mind. Kite searched in vain for an Atlanta tutor before reaching out to Hamilton, who invited her to visit Ohio for lessons. She returned from this introduction wanting more. When Waltraud Reiner of Australia announced a millinery workshop in the northeastern US, the plucky neophyte persuaded her to add an Atlanta event. Doing so required becoming its hostess. A friend skilled in public relations found them ink in the AJC and students traveled from as far away as Virginia and South Carolina. Talk about paying it forward. From these auspicious beginnings, Kite’s practice flourishes today. Ever generous, she gave an afternoon and valuable counsel to the model and me. These images are the fruit of our collaboration.
Intrigued? Crafty, DIY types should know of a workshop led by North Carolina milliner Jan Wutkowski at the Spruill Center in May. Please follow this link for details.

All of the Bikes from Alix Huntsman on Vimeo.

So many events, so little time. Blame it on Georgia Tech, whose Bike Week 2011 offers a full calendar of rides, a public forum and even a fashion show on Thursday at 11am. Event anthem All Of The Bikes features the many talents of frequent ASF contributor Heidi Vreeland. After Friday's Tour de Tech, ride over to Candler Park for cLiPs Of Faith, the traveling film festival produced by New Belgium Brewing. An example of their iconic cruiser will be raffled to raise money for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, whose Heels On Wheels ride Saturday opens the month of October with a flourish.

Becky Striepe calls her creations Cupcaprons. For sale at Dulce Vegan, they are but one way the lady behind Glue and Glitter has found to enjoy reducing our ecological footprint. "Cooking is so much greener than takeout," says she. If "a cute apron encourages you to get in the kitchen and put a meal together, I hope that I can make one to inspire you!"

Suzseams

In her West Side studio, milliner Susan Morehead turns felt, various straws and vintage, braided cellophane into one-of-a-kind artworks. "People knowing the hats are made from traditional techniques is really important," she explains. "The ubiquity of cheap, poorly made hats has led many women to mistakenly conclude that they can’t wear hats." Her Spring and Summer collection for 2011 is the culmination of a lifelong interest in sewing, a fine arts degree and a career in social work. Yes, Morehead believes in "the importance of cultural norms and the impact of self image on our lives" and that "the perfect hat can change the way [women] see themselves." Find one of your own
At The Collective or online.

Vintage buttons adorn this hat's pin and band. Many of Morehead's blocks were made by her husband.

Fans of the blog may remember an earlier visit with this aspiring environmental engineer, who kindly lent me an hour of her day for a trackside photo op. CSX obliged us with a passing train and the science of recycling results in ecofelt, crafted here into purple flowers by Rebekah McCallie of Owl Eyes.
