RALA is an acronym of Regional and Local Artisans, and a bright spot in Knoxville's Old City. Andy shows her style against a wall of paintings by Nashville resident Harry Underwood.

Happy Birthday To The 19th Amendment

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
“Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
So reads the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which became law in all states ninety-five years ago today. This monument in Knoxville commemorates Tennessee suffragists Lizzie Crozier French of that city, Anne Dallas Dudley of Nashville, and Elizabeth Avery Meriwether of Memphis. Their efforts and those of many others saw Tennessee become the thirty-sixth state to ratify the amendment on August 18, 1920. Certification from the state legislature reached Washington, DC eight days later, giving Americans universal suffrage.

The sight of a decorated bicycle compelled me to visit the Market Square clothing merchant Rococo Boutique. It seems that Smart Trips invited Knoxville businesses to join in their promotion of alternative transportation modes. Those pleated area maps and sound, if whimsical, advice were a crowd favorite.

Knoxville's Market Square is a lively testament to the power of a pedestrian plaza. Spaces within the adjacent parking garage cost a mere dollar per hour and all were filled to its sixth floor rooftop Thursday afternoon while happy people ice-skated, shopped, dined and played in the surrounding city center. Many Atlantans have said so and I second every one of them: close Euclid Avenue between Moreland and Colquitt Avenues to traffic and all of us will behold something magical.
