Here is one of those rare portraits, grabbed on the fly without asking. There simply was no opportunity in the mid-afternoon traffic to get out of the car and pay complement to her choice of shoes and socks. Cropped by half, the resulting image salutes both her sartorial sense and nonchalance in the surrounding chaos at the corner of Moreland and Euclid Avenues.

Credit goes to my sharp-eyed wife for spotting Re:Dress Upcycled Style at the Bascom in Highlands, North Carolina. Couturier Nancy Judd of Recycle Runway turns trash into unique dresses. This one she calls Tireless Couture. Its dots cut from bicycle inner tubes add a layer of cycling advocacy to the reduce, reuse,recycle ethic. The dresses will be on display through August 18 and are yet another good reason to visit Highlands this summer.

Heels On Wheels Saturday

As May draws to a close, the Heels On Wheels ride promises to put a memorable exclamation point on our month of All Things Bike. First, it coincides with day one of the Decatur Arts Festival. Second, Amber Raley has declared it a 'Sadie Hawkins' date:
Ladies are invited to bring along a friend, date, children, or pet! All should bring sunscreen and a sweater because of the forecasted early chill and sunny skies. Third, there will be coffee and pastries at Houndstooth Road, where proprietor and guest blogger Jae Schmidt has returned from a cycle-centric, April tour of England. A Decatur Pop Up Revisited

Whether dressing or cooking, success lies in combinations offering contrast, balance and harmony. Timing helps, too, so when Jarrett Stieber found himself between gigs at Empire State South and a soon to be open Asheville restaurant, he alighted in the kitchen of Desayuno, the weekday pop-up inside Decatur's Iberian Pig. His Old World tortillas are small frittatas incorporating barbeque the day I visited. Translucent radish slices bring peppery warmth to fiddle head fern in a gorgeous mound of coils and circles. Baby carrots in pork fat vinaigrette play with a pork belly at turns unctious and crisp in its salinity. The fleeting nature of this scheme leaves tomorrow, then Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week as our last chances to try these tapas. However, all is not lost to North Carolina: Stieber will continue to consult with Steady Hand Pour House as their future unfolds. They are lucky to have him and I cannot wait to see where these energies take them.

Streets Alive Sunday

Sunday afternoon between the hours of two and six, Peachtree Street will belong to the people. Check out the map of this urban carnival, which gets a rolling start from The Great Atlanta Bicycle Parade. Line up will take place at 1:30 on the Ellis Street corner (MARTA, Ritz-Carlton). Visitors From Greenville

Showing Will and Sarah bits of Atlanta included this iconic view of Midtown from Lake Clara Meer in Piedmont Park. They were in town to see Frida and Diego at The High. His salute to Greenville style is WAC AVE STREET PHOTOGRAPHY. As fans of each other's blogs since last November, our first meeting felt more like a reunion. Now it is my turn to make a road trip!

Make haste to the North Highland Avenue location of Aurora Coffee for its final week. It was here that Atlanta learned to love espresso drinks. I've been a fan from the beginning, when it shared the space with a salon and change from $2 sufficed for a tip. Nowadays the former residence is all coffee shop, gorgeously illuminated by windows on three sides. A talent incubator, it has nurtured many youthful dreams. Everyone has an Aurora story. Two of my favorites: one morning my dog slipped his leash outside and the barista allowed him to enter so we could corner and recapture him. On another fateful day, the dulcent tones of Belle and Sebastian first fell upon my ears there. Yes, those same bean varietals, roasted here by Batdorf & Bronson, will continue to distinguish the Little Five Points location. Aurora growlers and coffee carts may well appear. Along with Steady Hand at the Iberian Pig and plans for an Octane roastery, the evolution of Atlanta's coffee culture carries on.
