Victoriana returns Sunday to Oakland Cemetery, when Atlantans of the new millenium will be transported to a nineteenth century-themed afternoon lawn party offering carriage and walking tours, music, storytelling and crafts. There is even a Teddy Bear Tea for those young enough to suspend belief every day. For the rest of us, Sunday in the Park is a living connection to our city's past.

Her "go to item", a frilly, feminine cardigan by Banana Republic caught my eye, too. She cinched it with a vintage belt from the collection of Atlanta's own Bill Hallman. The exposed zipper is an up-to-the-minute fashion of her dress by Karen Millen, where "the fit of their clothing is amazing." Marc Jacobs pumps may have required some investment, but will repay careful wearing. Monogram and heart pendants are timeless icons by Elsa Peretti.

Morning rain put me in mind of galoshes and umbrellas, but today's surprise was this amazing pair of Tom's Wrap Boots. Part shoe, part ace bandage, they make her feel like dancing. Thrifted, cut-off man pants that will be worn 'til the point of falling apart define 'recession chic'. After all, it's not what you wear but how you rock it.

Trainers

Onitsuka Tiger track shoes were de rigueur in my school years. Both purposefully sporting and simply elegant, this trend is a welcome return to basics for trainers. Others have rocked such shoes in blog postings here and here.

Toward Autumn

September brings Atlanta a welcome change from the "dog days" of August. Temperatures a bit cooler, some afternoon showers and an earlier dusk spell the ending of summer. Her cardigan by Wet Seal is an old friend that picks up the hints of autumnal color in a sundress by Forever 21, but the Volatile shoes from Festivity in Virginia Highland leave no doubt to the season.

Profile: LRW Designs

Colorful geometry and whimsey first encountered at the Gifted! market in Roswell promised a memorable meeting with the artist herself. Lynn Weinberg graciously invited me into her home studio to talk about these creations. What began with the carding and spinning of fibers evolved into hand-painting of silks for "the long, flowing dresses, 'wearable art'," she remembers. While the gutta French resist technique is now applied to her scarves alone, these delightful cotton jackets are hand-painted at the same batik workshop that she has employed from the beginning, when her husband's naval career took them to the Phillipines.

Such detail recalls a military campaign ribbon while her scarves pay homage to Alexander Calder and Piet Mondrian. It's easy to see this stilled flock taking flight on a breeze of one's own making in the wake of a bicycle or convertible sports car. Yes, these bits were the scraps. "We waste nothing," she is proud to say. More odds and ends coalesce into necklaces or earrings.

If all this creativity weren't enough for one, Weinberg has also run the business end of things since her partner retired from that role. "It's easy in this age of computers," she claims.
