Blog Rolling In Little Five Points

Saturday's PATH and BeltLine ride yielded more than a Mother's Day posting. In addition to raising those two, Christina has given herself the job of blogger. Sundayshoppe.com is her visual diary in images both digital and analog. For our blogging summit, she chose this Fuji instant camera, which, in her hands, produces monochromatic prints at turns dreamy and quirky. We agreed that thrift shopping leaves money in the budget for splurging; witness those patent leather shoes from Billy Reid.

At The Peachtree Plaza Hotel

The three tallest buildings, from left to right, are the work of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Johnson/Burgee Architects and Atlanta's own John Portman, whose iconic Peachtree Plaza Hotel stands 723 feet above the street. Floors 72 and 73 are a revolving lounge and restaurant, which I was fortunate to visit in 1977, a year after its opening. Then bead curtains hanged from the ceiling and appeared to be swaying that stormy day. They were in fact hanging plumb while the building gently swayed as it was designed to do. More violent gyrations attended the 2008 tornado strike downtown, when its arc was estimated to have reached two feet. Our city's graceful cylindrical tower stands proudly today, fresh from a $20 million makeover that included new, stronger windows. Here are some memories from the party Atlanta Magazine threw to celebrate this renewal.

Happy Mother's Day

Was it two summers ago that Christina and her parasol found me in Little Five Points? How the time flies. Now she has blog of her own called Sunday, not to mention two adorable daughters. Yesterday afternoon we defied the promise of thunderstorms and were rewarded with an adventure on two wheels.

The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and CycloFemme honor Mother's Day with an expression of world wide cycling solidarity. All are welcome Sunday at 3pm, when our riders gather at the ABC office, 692 Kirkwood Ave SE in Cabbagetown. Roll-off is 3:30 for a leisurely city tour to conclude at Sister Louisa's Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium where DJ Vicki will be spinning the dance tunes.

Tuesday's encounter on the Atlanta high street reminded me of two visitors from Alabama who gave this blog its very first post.
