The Sartorialist

While Scott Schuman's appearance last September at the Hagedorn Gallery offered fertile style blogging ground, his Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta lecture tonight proved informative. Now we know that Bruce Webber and Chuck Close inspire him. He rides his bike around Manhattan in search of the stylish. The resulting portraits he sees less as reportage than romantic points of departure that ask, where does this story go from here? While not a studio photographer, he recently put a lighting kit in his New York digs to see what affect learning about it would have on his street photography. In response to my question of how he approaches people, Schuman said that he doesn't mind hearing 'no' and that it sometimes spurs him to try a bit harder. Interesting. Like me, he would enjoy having more women of a certain age appear on his blog. For the complete schedule of SCAD Style 2011, please follow this link.

  1. I attended the lecture yesterday and thought it was very informative and good. I brought my daughter along and she totally enjoyed it. I want to start taking 'street styled' photos...I think I'm going bold :)

  5. I was actually sitting in the front row, once they move the reserved seating signs out of the way. I may have seen you? Were you wearing your camera around your neck?
