Smart Glass Dressing

IMG_3591
IMG_2772
Kathleen Plate celebrates the reduce, reuse, recycle ethic by turning old Coke bottles into cascading ringlets. Her Smart Glass designs have appeared on this blog before, as earrings worn to a Captain Planet Foundation gala, so when a friend offered to model one of her glass dresses, I scoured Decatur for a suitable location. Thank you, Worthmore Jewelers, for lending us something special.

Aren't those San Fran Booties a bit of fun? Sustainably made in the USA, they are ecofriendly, too. Following the success of her April trunk show in Seattle, Julie Brown returns to Atlanta for a one day event at Glowdry in Buckhead this Thursday from 6 'til 8:30.

Long a champion of the mantra reduce, reuse, recycle, I am pleased to be the photographer for Spring Into Green. These images are but a sampling of the green goodness that awaits your visit. Come by the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church Saturday between 10 am and 5 pm to see what creative minds have done to celebrate the abundance we already have.

Ralph Lauren, of course

Known for his portraits of fashionable philanthropists, photographer Roger Moenks has turned his lens to environmentalists and calls the body of work, I Am Eco Warrior. In his honor, Ted Turner, Laura Turner Seydel, Carter Roberts, Sylvia Earle and Costas Christ held a reception and book signing in the Ralph Lauren store at Lenox Mall. Fifteen percent of that evening's sales were donated to Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. Seydel thanked Moenks for making environmentalism sexy. She also lauded the green voting record of Congressman John Lewis and looks to rural churches for spreading the word as stewardship of creation. The issue affects all of us and must be approached in as many ways. Moenks sees his book as but part of a "multi-dimensional media platform to enable individuals and groups to connect, share and directly participate in the new eco-economy."

Weaving A Better Life is the business of re:loom. More than repurposing fabric into rugs, scarves and bags, the Initiative For Affordable Housing in Decatur is renewing the fortunes of those in need by teaching them valuable skills. Donations of disused materials both gain and give new life. Care to lend a hand? Visit affordablehousingatl.org or call 404-299-9979.

Inspired by a friend who gave a kidney to save his father, she screen printed 'recycle life' on a shirt to celebrate the benefaction. So began her line of tees, each a statement of sharing the bounty that surrounds us. Her own giving extends to a blood bank and Locks Of Love. She walks the talk.

At The Goat Farm: Little Bird Blue

IMG_1714
IMG_1739
Recently a much-loved shirt from years past became trousers for a small boy. While its collar and cuffs had frayed beyond usefulness to me, enough fabric remained for it to be upcycled into something new. Everywhere collectors, designers, entrepreneurs and stylish folk are celebrating the abundance of what we already have in an eco-chic movement defined by the mantra, reduce, reuse, recycle. Vintage boots and re-purposed denim apparel from Little Bird Blue bring a southern flair to the roster of vendors who will be gathering at The Goat Farm June 30-July 1. Please follow this link learn more about The Revival.
