Did you know that the first mayor of Atlanta was also its first saloon keeper? Moses W. Formwalt won his 1848 election for the Free and Rowdy Party in opposition to the Moral Party. Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle have written an account of our city's complicated relationship with alcohol, Atlanta Beer: A Heady History Of Brewing In The Hub Of The South. Their research has been, shall we say, distilled into an entertaining tour of Oakland Cemetery called Malts And Vaults. While the Friday tour is sold out, a few spaces remain for 5pm Saturday. Claim yours here.

Save The Date: June 7

A few tickets remain for the Park Pride Community Garden Tour. Like last year, there will be a bus, but bikes are the way to experience and share all our city has to offer. The ride begins and ends at the Elliott Street Pub, kicking off the week long Atlanta Cycling Festival. See you there!

100 lire challenge
IMG_9421
This arrangement of Italian colors was seen at the High Museum for Art In Bloom.

A tradition one hundred years in the making, gran fondo rides are spirited parties celebrating all things Italian: art, culture, design, food and, yes, bicycling. Thank the Southern Bicycle League and the city of Roswell for bringing Gran Fondo Italia Atlanta–Roswell to Georgia October 18-19. Saturday offers cultural immersion, an opportunity to sample Italian delights and get psyched for Sunday's exertions. Times will be recorded so riders may push themeselves or challenge the fields in distances of 30, 62 and 105 miles. Four miles of the long route are a timed interval ascending Burnt Mountain. Bob Dallas of the SBL extended a personal challenge to Roswell Mayor Jere Wood, a 100 lire coin for completing the climb. The view alone is priceless and the descent a thrilling turn homeward to the grand finale in Roswell.

While MODA's trio of MakerBot 3-D printers continue to dazzle us with visions of a diy future, a new exhibition, Design For Social Impact, celebrates solutions to more fundamental, humanitarian design challenges. Nearby in Clarkston, Georgia, less waste and more jobs are the results of Billboard Bags, an initiative to employ refugees in the production of chic carryall bags made from upcycled billboards and coffee sacks. In distant Johannesburg, South Africa, the quest for an improved method of water storage and transportation became the Hippo Roller.

I knew about multi-hull sailors pulling waterskiers, but a cyclist towing an camping trailer was yesterday's trivia surprise. Who knows what sort of lore lies at the nexus of city cycling and street fashion? Today's promised cloudy skies offer shelter from the sun, no matter your outdoor activity, and the Small Room Collective offers yet another reason to visit Decatur. Look for their vintage Airstream trailer next to Victory Sandwich Shop on Church Street.
