If a look can exceed the sum of its parts, that synergy results from how someone chooses to wear them. Her jacket is an original from Rollick in Virginia-Highland and made from the sort of stretchy denim often seen as jeggings. Thus it was an easy job to fold the cuffs and push the sleeves back to elbow length. She swapped a tank top (!) for a friend's floral print dress. Today its hem is tucked under the belt for a tunic profile. That buckle came from another pair of boots and adds an asymetrical flourish to this one. Her mother tie-dyed the scarf.

Being named Best Fashion Blogger for 2011 by Atlanta Magazine does bring its perks. When last month TOOTSIES hosted the National Association of Women Business Owners' holiday party, I was invited to blog about it here. Knoxville's Market Square is a lively testament to the power of a pedestrian plaza. Spaces within the adjacent parking garage cost a mere dollar per hour and all were filled to its sixth floor rooftop Thursday afternoon while happy people ice-skated, shopped, dined and played in the surrounding city center. Many Atlantans have said so and I second every one of them: close Euclid Avenue between Moreland and Colquitt Avenues to traffic and all of us will behold something magical.

There are lessons for all of us in its green features, which are being reviewed for L.E.E.D. Platinum certification. In lieu of conventional roofing materials, ornamental grasses line the walkways and offer a lush contrast to the surrounding urbanscape. While H&M supplied the turtleneck, her hat, skirt and boots were collected from thrifts and flea markets, proving once again that some great looks are not what you wear but how you wear them.

Saturday I returned to my street fashion blogging roots when Chattanooga hosted MAINx24. The subject of my very first blog's fourth posting, Glamour In The Garden was the 2008 event's fashion show. Little did I then know that one year later, Sondra and Travis Aten would co-produce with me a radically different, Wes Anderson-themed show of vintage and upcycled looks. South side Chattanooga applauded our theatricality and a tradition was born. The Atens put together a Tim Burtonesque feature last year and, for 2011, collaborated with Zombi Candi for an over-the-top, John Waters inspired celebration of hair, hot rods, hair products and sundry sixties stuff. They had been shopping at the Army Surplus Store, still in business all these years at 342 Peachtree Street, where they found her scarf. The plaid skirt was a lucky thrift score from long ago at Last Chance in Morrow, Georgia and remains a wardrobe staple. Target provided their cable knit and Argyle patterned sweaters. News came this week that its 450 postings in fifteen months have earned this blog an Atlanta Magazine "Best Of Atlanta" award.
